EMERGENCY ALERT Issued as Another 48 Hours of Rain on the Way

May 12, 2022

Heavy rains have once again led to flooding concerns in southeast Queensland, less than four months after the region was last inundated.

All public schools in Toowoomba, Lockyer Valley, Ipswich, Brisbane, Wide Bay-Burnett, and Channel Country regions have closed as a result of the flooding.

The emergency warning for the Lockyer Valley region west of Brisbane has been issued as flooding approaches along the Laidley Creek.

This morning, the regional council said,   “Based on current conditions and forecast rain, it is very likely local roads will continue to be cut and groundwater will rise.”

“There are indications water levels in areas subject to flooding could rise rapidly today and close exit routes including major connection roads such as the Glenore Grove Crossroads and Gatton-Helidon Rd.

“While the urge to leave home and observe conditions may be tempting, the council encourages residents to avoid all unnecessary travel and stay in a safe place until threats subside.”

114 emergency calls were made on Thursday night, with most coming from southeast Queensland.

More than 5 people have had to escape from their cars after they became trapped in rising floodwaters.
