Tsunami Warning After Massive 7.3 Earthquake Strikes Near Australia

May 20, 2022

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake was detected near Australia on Thursday evening, followed by a tsunami warning for Macquarie Island.

The 7.4-magnitude quake was recorded by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology off the coast of Papua New Guinea at around 8 p.m.

The ABM lowered the danger to “tsunami watch” for around an hour before it was discontinued.

The US Geological Service detected a quake with a magnitude of at least 7, but the reading was later revised down on review.

Macquarie Island is 1,600 kilometers from Tasmania and is home to a research station that was established in the 1940s.

Only around 14 and 40 people live on the island at any one time.
